Redemption is a series of portraits in enamel that re-vision and re-interpret daguerreotypes of enslaved African Americans commissioned in the mid-19th century by Harvard professor Louis Agassiz for anthropological study.
The exhibition premiered in a solo show in ArtsWorcester’s East Gallery that ran from October 7 - November 7. A review in the Boston Globe by art critic Cate McQuaid, notes “In ‘Redemption,’ a tender yet unflinching exhibition at ArtsWorcester, enamelist Jennifer Davis Carey approaches Zealy’s subjects with love.… Carey’s enamel pours respect into images empty of it. “Redemption” is homeopathic, a small gesture in the wake of a giant history. May its effects ripple backward and provide succor to these ancestors.”
